National study on xenophobia and polarization

Data science to understand polarization

What is it?

Together with the Canadian Embassy, the Santo Domingo Foundation, the Open Society Foundation and the Ford Foundation, we led the National Study on Inclusion and Cohesion in Colombia, which is the first nationwide study that aims to evidence xenophobia and polarization in online and offline environments.

Challenge

To analyze polarization and cohesion in Colombia, identifying which are the issues that mobilize the Colombian population and generate polarization or consensus, what relationships exist between them and with which values they are associated. This analysis was carried out through consultations on issues such as environment, migration, peace agreement, corruption, among others.

Strategy

Detect recurrent and mobilizing themes, known as “salient”, through an exhaustive analysis of academic literature, the study of surveys and a preliminary investigation of data in social networks. In addition, analyze polarization in offline environments through a nationally representative survey.
